LEWIS 0.7mm Metal Deck as the basis for a light concrete roof deck
The former factory building on Keerbaan in Ranst (Belgium), a distinctive structure dating from the interwar period, is being given a remarkable new life by Elbumo Bouwrealisaties from Schilde.
After an extensive renovation — preserving its original architectural character — the site will soon host regional businesses, meeting and event spaces, and a museum.
For the new roof construction, the project team sought a solution that was light, slim, and quick to install — a modern alternative to the existing heavy roof build-up, which had been renewed several times over the years.
The main challenge was to ensure that the new roof deck on the existing steel structure would seamlessly connect to the concrete slabs of an adjoining section of the roof.
The solution chosen was a concrete roof deck with LEWIS 0.7 Metal Deck.
Thanks to the increased LEWIS steel thickness of 0.7 mm and direct fixing to the steel structure, it was possible to realise an 80 mm thick concrete deck with spans of 1,200–1,300 mm — all without temporary propping.
This floor thickness made it possible to connect smoothly to the existing concrete section, creating a uniform and consistent roof build-up throughout.
Another clear advantage of using the LEWIS 0.7 Metal Deck lies in the visible soffit.
With a protective coating applied, the underside remains exposed as an attractive architectural feature. The excellent rigidity and strength of the sheets ensure a perfectly smooth and flat ceiling surface.
The LEWIS 0.7 Metal Deck were supplied in custom lengths ranging from 2,850 mm to 5,460 mm.
